Arnaldo Augusto Nora Antunes Filho is born on September, 2nd, in São Paulo, SP, Brazil, son of Arnaldo Augusto Nora Antunes and Dora Leme Ferreira Antunes. Arnaldo is the fourth of seven children, his brothers and sisters are Álvaro, Maria Augusta (Uche), José Leopoldo (Léo), Cira, Sandra and Maria Renata.
 
1967
He starts studying at Luis de Camões, where he continues his studies until secondary school. • His favorite soccer team is Santos Futebol Club (until today).
 
1973
He moves to an application high school belonging to the Catholic University (PUC) SP, São Domingos, in the area of Perdizes. He starts to enjoy going to school and to feel interested about artistic languages in general. He starts drawing and writing his first poems.
 
1975
He goes to Equipe high school, which develops a strong work on art-education. Serginho Groissman is at the head of the musical projects of the Equipe Cultural Center, which brings performances of artists such as Nelson Cavaquinho, Cartola, Clementina de Jesus, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, among others. o At Equipe, Arnaldo has cinema classes, and he creates Temporal (Storm), a super-8 fiction, which lasts 40 minutes. He meets Branco Mello, Sérgio Britto, Paulo Miklos, Ciro Pessoa, Nando Reis and Marcelo Fromer, who also studied at Equipe. o He starts composing with them frequently, and they all study in the same classroom. From the band Titãs, only Bellotto and Charles dindn’t study at Equipe. o From the 2nd to the 3rd year of high school he publishes the novel CAMALEÃO (CHAMELEON), printed at school.
 
1978
He starts studying languages at the University of São Paulo (USP).
 
1979
The family moves to Rio de Janeiro, and Arnaldo goes along with them, transferring his school studies to the Catholic University (PUC), Rio de Janeiro. • He creates, with a cinema group from college, the experimental super-8 film Jimi Gogh, with 15 minutes, with pictures by Van Gogh and music by Jimi Hendrix.
 
1980
His parents continue living in Rio, but Arnaldo decides to come back to São Paulo, where he moves along with Go, his first wife, with whom he remains married for seven years. • For about two years, they live in the house of the artist José Roberto Aguilar, with whom they create several performances, up to the creation of the Banda Performática [Performatic Band]. They perform their shows in several events at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM, RJ), Pinacoteca do Estado (SP), Cooperativa dos Artistas Plásticos de São Paulo SP, Galeria São Paulo (SP), Teatro da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (SP), Paulicéia Desvairada (SP), Parque Lage (RJ), among others. During the performances, Arnaldo, with a suitcase full of objects, sings, plays the percussion and invents nonsensical situations, such as combing long-plays, beating pans or throwing books upwards. • He writes and produces along with Go, manually, small books printed in xerox: A FLECHA TEM SÓ UMA CHANCE [THE ARROW HAS BUT ONE CHANCE], and DEU NA CABEÇA DE ALGUÉM UMA ÁRVORE, UM PIANO E MUITAS GALINHAS [A TREE, A PIANO AND MANY HENS HAS COME INTO SOMEONE’S HEAD]. • Along with Beto Borges and Sergio Papi, he publishes the magazine Almanak 80. • He intensely composes with Paulo Miklos, who also belongs to the Performatic Band. They both enroll the song Desenho [Drawing] at Vila Madalena’s Second Festival. With another partnership along with Paulo, A menor estrela [The smallest star], Arnaldo is awarded with the prize of best lyrics at the FAAP Music Festival.
 
1981
Along with Beto Borges, Sergio Papi and Nuno Ramos he publishes the magazine Kataloki (Almanak 81). • Arnaldo and Paulo Miklos call the Trio Mamão, formed by Toni Belloto, Branco Mello and Marcelo Fromer, more Nuno Ramos, Sérgio Britto, Ciro Pessoa, Fausto Fawcett and others to participate in the recording of the Fita das musas [Muse tape], which was released at the Third World Bar in São Paulo. • He participates in the videos Kataloki, created by Walter Silveira especially for the releasing of the magazine, and Sonho e contra-sonho de uma cidade [Dream and counter-dream of a city], by Aguilar. • He sings at the event A idade da pedra jovem [The age of the young rock], at Mário de Andrade library, a show which stands as the beginning of the formation Arnaldo, Sérgio Britto, Paulo Miklos, Marcelo Fromer, Nando Reis, Ciro Pessoa and Tony Bellotto, among others, on the same stage.
 
1982
The Titãs do Ieiê [Ieiê Titans] perform together for the first time, at the Lira Paulistana Theater and at Sesc Pompéia, in São Paulo, with nine members: Arnaldo (vocals), Paulo Miklos (vocals and sax), Sérgio Britto (vocals and keys), Branco Mello (vocals), Nando Reis (bass and vocals), Ciro Pessoa (vocals), Marcelo Fromer and Tony Bellotto (guitars) and André Jung (drums). • The group follows for two years performing in places such as Napalm, Rose Bombom, Madam Satan, Radar Tantan, Circo Voador [The Flying Circus RJ], among others. They show at TV programs such as Fábrica do Som [The sound factory] and Paulicéia Desvairada [Crazy São Paulo]. • Aguilar e Banda Performática [Aguilar and the Performatic Band] record their first album, by the independent producer Neon Fonográfica. Arnaldo continues writing and composing. • Arnaldo and Go create the exhibition Caligrafias [Calligraphies], at the Galeria Cultura, in São Paulo, where they present, at the opening, the performatic opera A Espada sinfônica [The symphonic sword], with several guests. They also create performances at the Pinacoteca do Estado, Defeitos cônicos [Conic defects], at the Livraria Belas Artes, Noite de performance: epicaligráfica [Performance night: epicalligraphic], at the Sesc Pompéia Robôs efêmeros [Ephemeral robots], among others. • Along with Go, Paulo Miklos and Nuno Ramos, Arnaldo creates the group Os intocáveis [The untouchables], which plays at the theater Lira Paulistana and with which he shows, for the first time, the song Bichos escrotos [Nasty animals], with a special participation of Nando Reis. • This year, for the first time, Arnaldo’s songs are recorded by another interpreter, Belchior, who includes in his record PARAÍSO [PARADISE], Estranheleza [Strangeauty], by Arnaldo, and Ma, by Arnaldo, Aguilar and Nuno Ramos.
 
1983
Arnaldo publishes his first book, OU E [OR AND], an album of visual poems, manually published. The release is at Sesc Pompéia, with a performance by Os intocáveis [The untouchables].
"AND/OR is a book and a box. On the top of the box there are two holes with a rolling circle inside; when you turn this circle, the most distant alphabets pass through the holes: letter-cinema. Inside the box there are 29 loose poems: they are charades, visualized coincidences, re-reading of other texts (Hoelderlin, Haroldo de Campos, Flaubert, Mick Jagger, Blake, Pagu), long answers with short answers and, in almost all of them, calligraphies along with the reading. Arnaldo participates in the visual poetry show Poesia Evidência [Evidence poetry], at PUC-SP. • Ciro Pessoa leaves the Titãs do Ieiê. • The group signs a contract with the WEA recording company and starts being called simply Titãs. They record their first album, TITÃS, produced by Peninha. The song Sonífera ilha [Soniferous Island] becomes a national success and Arnaldo participates, with the group, in several auditorium programs, with a high audience on TV, presented by Chacrinha, Bolinha, Raul Gil and Barros de Alencar. The Titãs start getting known all over Brazil. They begin to perform shows in other states where they had never played before. • The band Gueto records the song Respeito [Respect], a partnership between Arnaldo and Edson X.
 
1985
Arnaldo participates in the meeting Conversa à luz dos vinte anos de Gil [Conversation in the light of Gil’s 20 years], at the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, with Antonio Risério, Waly Salomão and others. • André Jung leaves Titãs to go to the band Ira and the drummer Charles Gavin comes from Ira to Titãs. • Arnaldo records, with the Titãs, the album TELEVISÃO [TELEVISION] produced by Lulu Santos. • Arnaldo follows, with the Titãs, performing the show Televisão, in several cities in Brazil, and with them, he participates in the film Areias escaldantes [Feverish sand], by Francisco de Paula, in Rio de Janeiro. • Arnaldo is arrested (with Toni Bellotto) with a small amount of heroin and he remains in prison for one month. • The Titãs Record the song Planeta morto [Dead planet], by Arnaldo Antunes, Marcelo Fromer and Sergio Britto, for the Globo Network special program, The Harley Era. Som Livre releases the soundtrack of this program.
 
1986
The Titãs releases CABEÇA DINOSSAURO [DINOSAUR HEAD], WEA, the first album produced by Liminha, which received the platinum award, and they travel throughout Brazil until 1987. • Usina Press/Gotham City creates the video Auto-retrato [Self-portrait] based on Arnaldo Antunes, with his participation. • Arnaldo publishes his second book, PSIA, by the publishing house Expressão. • The band Barão Vermelho records Eu tô feliz [I’m happy], a partnership between Arnaldo Antunes and Frejat, in the album DECLARE GUERRA! [DECLARE THE WAR!].
 
1987
Arnaldo publishes articles and poems in several newspapers and magazines. • He participates in the exhibition Palavra Imágica [Imagic poetry], at MAC/Museum of Contemporary Art from the University of São Paulo and the video Agráfica [Agraphics], produced by Walter Silveira, in São Paulo, for the release of a homonymous magazine. • Arnaldo records, along with the Titãs, the album JESUS NÃO TEM DENTES NO PAÍS DOS BANGUELAS [JESUS HAS NO TEETH IN THE COUNTRY OF THE TOOTHLESS], WEA, produced by Liminha, and which receives the golden award. • The Barão Vermelho records a second partnership between Arnaldo and Frejat, Quem me olha só [Whoever just looks at me], in the album ROCK'N GERAL [ROCK’N GENERAL]. • The Gang 90, in their first record after the death of Julio Barroso, records Vida dura [Tough life], by Arnaldo and Taciana Barros, in the album PEDRA 90 [90 Rock].
 
1988
He starts living with Zaba Moreau, with whom he has his first daughter, Rosa. • The Titãs release their new LP at the Hollywood Rock, in the same night in which play Ira! and the international band Pretenders. Titãs’ success is remarkable both in the performance in Rio de Janeiro as in São Paulo. "Arnaldo Antunes and his colleagues from the Titãs stole the party prepared for the Pretenders", says Jornal do Brasil. Arnaldo stands out for his performance and follows along with the Titãs performing the show Jesus não tem dentes no País dos Banguelas, in Brazil and abroad. • He co-publishes the graphic and poetic magazine Atlas [Almanak 88]. Alltogether they’re 84 creators in an album that assembles poetry, graphic arts, plastic arts, music and cinema. • The Titãs perform Go Back at the XXII Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, where they perform songs from the repertoire of their first records in different arrangements. Before that, they rehearse in England, with Liminha, who also participates, playing with them. From the recording of this show, the album GO BACK is released, mixed in London and followed by the release in Brazil. They do a tour in Portugal, opening the show of the band Xutos e Pontapés. GO BACK receives a platinum award. • He participates in the jam session Clássicos do Samba [Samba Classics], at Aeroanta, with Akira S., Paulo Zinner, Branco Mello, Hélcio Aguirra and Pamps, playing songs by Ataulfo Alves, Noel Rosa, Jackson do Pandeiro, Clementina de Jesus, Luiz Gonzaga, among other composers. • He acts, with the Titãs, in a short film called Rock Paulista [Rock from São Paulo], by Anna Muylaert, São Paulo. • New songs are recorded by Barão — Lente [Lens], by Arnaldo and Frejat, and Não me acabo [I can’t finish myself], by Arnaldo and Paulo Miklos. Besides, Dulce Quental, ex-member of the band Sempre Livre, records a new partnership between Arnaldo and Frejat, Onde mora o amor [Where love lives]. • The Titãs release, under the pseudonym of Vestidos de Espaço [Space Dressed] a single with two carnival songs, Pipi popô and the Marcha do Demo [The demon’s march], with vocal participations of Paula Toller and Jorge Mautner. • A partnership between Arnaldo and Paulo Leminski, U.T.I. [E.R.], is recorded by the band Clínica. • Sandra Sá records Tempo [Time], by Arnaldo and Paulo Miklos, and Roberto de Carvalho records O que você quer [What do you want], by Arnaldo and Roberto de Carvalho.

Arnaldo follows performing the show Go Back with the Titãs. • He does the curatorship of the exhibition The Artist’s Look, at MAC / Museum of Contemporary Art in São Paulo, with works from the museum collection, where he gives privilege "to works where the process of creation is more apparent, or when this process turns into the art object itself". • With the Titãs, he records the album Õ BLÉSQ BLOM, WEA, produced by Liminha, which receives the golden award. Arnaldo does the graphic project of the cover and the insert of the record. Caetano Veloso and Moreno Veloso sign the release. • The show Õ Blésq Blom is presented in Los Angeles (M Machine), Boston (Paradise Club) and in New York (S.O.B.’S), in the USA and in several cities in Brazil. • Arnaldo participates in the performance of d'A Revolução Francesa [The French revolution], interpreting Marat, a show with 300 actors and a symphonic orchestra, in front of the Pacaembu Stadium, directed by José Roberto
Aguilar to celebrate 200 years of the French Revolution. • Marisa Monte records Comida [Food], by Arnaldo, Fromer and Britto, in her first album.

Some of Arnaldo’s poems are projected at the urban intervention done on Paulista Avenue, along with Haroldo and Augusto de Campos and Walter Silveira. • He publishes TUDOS, by Iluminuras. • He reads poems by Paulo Leminski, in an event specially meant to honor the poet, called Perhappiness I, at Curitiba Cultural Foundation. • He participates in the show of visual poetry Transfutur, Visuelle Poesie, in the city of Kassel, Germany, under the curatorship of Friedrich Block, André Vallias and Valeri Scherstjanoi. • Arnaldo writes Cabelo [Hair] with Jorge Benjor, which is also recorded by him and by Gal Costa.
 
1991
He performs with the Titãs at Rock in Rio II, in Maracanã, in the same evening of Hanoi-Hanói, Guns’n Roses, Billy Idol and Faith No More. • The book PSIA is republished by Iluminuras. • Celeste, second daughter of Arnaldo and Zaba, is born. • Arnaldo participates in the show of Visual Poetry Nomuque Edições 1974/1991, at MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo [Art Museum from São Paulo]. • For the first time, he records a solo song: E só [And only], included in the album ROCK DE AUTOR [AUTHOR’S ROCK], released by the independent recording company Manifesto, along with other well known names in Brazilian rock such as: Paulo Miklos, Nasi, from Ira!, Akira S., from Akira S. & As Garotas que Erraram etc. Zaba Moreau does the graphic production of the cover and the insert. • The Secretary of Culture, honoring the Paulista Avenue, exhibits Arnaldo’s poem H2Omem [H2Omen] on a billboard. • He participates in the second urban intervention with a projection of laser poems on the buildings of the avenues Paulista and Consolação, now also in sound versions. The event included poems by Arnaldo, Augusto de Campos, Haroldo de Campos, Décio Pignatari, Walter Silveira and the Mexican poet Octavio Paz. • He releases with the Titãs the album TUDO AO MESMO TEMPO AGORA [ALL AT THE SAME TIME NOW], WEA, produced by the Titãs themselves, which receives the golden award. The 8 members of the band sign all the 15 tracks of the record together, for the first time. Conspiração Filmes produces the home video with the making of of the CD recording. • They perform the show of Tudo ao Mesmo Tempo Agora all over Brazil and in three cities in the United States [San Diego, Los Angeles and São Francisco]. • Marisa Monte records Volte para o seu lar [Go back home], by Arnaldo Antunes, Eu não sou da sua rua [I don’t belong to your street], by Arnaldo Antunes e Branco Mello, and Beija eu [Kiss I], by Arnaldo Antunes, Arto Lindsay and Marisa Monte, in MAIS [MORE], her second record. • Marina Lima records a partnership between her and Arnaldo, Grávida [Pregnant]. • The song Não há perdão para o chato [There’s no apology for the boring], a partnership between Arnaldo,Cazuza and Zaba Moreau, is released in POR AÍ…, a album done after Cazuza’s death.

He participates in the first international computer poetry exhibition [p0es1e — digitale dichtkunst], organized by André Vallias and Friedrich Block, at the Galerie Am Market, Annaberg-Burchholz, Germany. • He produces the CD ISTO NÃO É UM LIVRO DE VIAGEM [THIS IS NOT A TRAVELING BOOK] in which the poet Haroldo de Campos records 16 poems from the book GALÁXIAS [GALAXIES], followed in the citar by Alberto Marsicano, by the publishing house 34. • He receives the award of best song of the year for Grávida [Pregnant], done with Marina Lima, granted by the APCA [Paulista Association of Art Critics]. • He starts working in computer animations with Zaba Moreau, Kiko Mistrorigo and Célia Catunda. • He creates graphic works along with Augusto de Campos for the book RIMBAUD LIVRE [RIMBAUD FREE], released by the publishing house Perspectiva. • He publishes the book AS COISAS [THE THINGS], by Iluminuras, illustrated by his daughter Rosa, then three years old. • Arnaldo decides to leave the Titãs after ten years as a member of the band. He releases, by BMG, the recording company which hires him as a solo artist, the CD and video NOME [NAME], which he had been creating with Zaba Moreau, Célia Catunda and Kiko Mistrorigo for more than a year, mixing music, poetry and graphic production in a single project. The CD is produced by Arnaldo, Paulo Tatit and Rodolfo Stroeter, with special participations by Marisa Monte, João Donato, Arto Lindsay, Edgard Scandurra and Péricles Cavalcanti. The vídeo contains 30 pieces intending at giving movement to the written word. • The BOOK AS COISAS [THE THINGS], is awarded with the Jabuti poetry prize. • Arnaldo participates in the exhibition Arte Brasil, in Konstanz, Germany. • He integrates the group Ouver, with Augusto de Campos, Haroldo de Campos, Décio Pignatari, Livio Tragtemberg, Walter Silveira and others. They perform a poetry show in the celebration of the 30th year of the National Vanguard Week, at the Teatro Alterosa, at the Cultural Center of the UFMG [Federal University of Minas Gerais], in Belo Horizonte, MG, and at
"Perhappiness 93", event in the honor of Paulo Leminski, organized by the Curitiba Cultural Foundation. • He creates the cover of the book TEXTOS E TRIBOS [TEXTS AND TRIBES], by Antônio Risério, Imago. • Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso record, in their collective album TROPICÁLIA 2, the song As Coisas [The things], done by Gil upon a text by Arnaldo. • The Ira! records Perigo [Danger], a partnership between Arnaldo and Edgard Scandurra.

He participates in several exhibitions in Brazil: Entretexto [Intertext], a solo exhibition at the Art Center UFF, UFRJ [Federal University of Rio de Janeiro], in Niterói, RJ; The artist book O livro-objeto [The object book], Visual Art Center Raimundo Cela, Culture State Secretary from Ceará; Arte /Cidade [Art/City] [1st Module] — A Cidade Sem Janelas [The windowless city], curated by Nelson Brissac, at the Matadouro Municipal [Municipal slaughter house], São Paulo. • Along with the poet Lenora de Barros he participates in the performance O desejo é o começo do corpo [The desire is the beginning of the body], at the II Biennial Meeting of the Psychoanalysis Brazilian Society from São Paulo, "Corpo-Mente, uma fronteira móvel" [Body-Mind, a mobile boarder], São Paulo. • The group Cena 11 [Scene 11], from Santa Catarina, does the performance O Novo Cangaço [The new cangaço] with songs by Arnaldo. • With Zaba Moreau, he goes to Austria, where he shows the performance Nome [Name], with music, readings and video, at the event Club Dadada, Festival Steirischer Herbst, in the city of Graz. • During the year he performs the show Nome in several Brazilian cities, with the scenario projected by Nuno Ramos, where the video Nome is projected onto huge white t-shirts, inflated by wind machines. The band that follows him is formed by Edgard Scandurra [electric guitar], Paulo Tatit [bass and acoustic guitar], Zaba Moreau [keys], Peter Price [percussion] e Pedro Ito [drums]. • In Rio, Marisa Monte participates in the show, singing Alta noite [High night] with him. • The video NOME is shown in video festivals and shows in the United States, Austria, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Holland, Monaco, Australia, Uruguay, Argentina, Columbia and Chile. He receives an award from the juri of the The First Annual New York Video Festival, New York, USA, and the recommendation from the juri of the International Video Festival from the city of Vigo, in Spain, in 1995. • He participates in the soundtrack of the film Mil e Uma [A thousand and one], directed by Susana Moraes, composed by Péricles Cavalcanti, interpreting Tema de Antonio [Antonios’s theme] by Péricles Cavalcanti and Perfil [Profile] by Arnaldo, Nando Reis and Péricles Cavalcanti. Natasha Records release this soundtrack in the album MIL E UMA. • Arnaldo participates in the children’s album CANÇÕES DE NINAR [LULLABIES], release in the USA by Ellipsis arts… in the album BRAZILIAN LULLABY • Some of his songs are recorded by Marisa Monte, like Alta noite, his authorship, Bem leve [Very light] and De mais ninguém [Nobody else’s], along with Marisa. • Adriana Calcanhotto records Estrelas [Stars], by Arnaldo and Sergio Britto. • Cássia Eller records Socorro [Help], by Arnaldo and Alice Ruiz. • Margareth Menezes records O que [What] and the band Golpe de Estado records No entanto [Nevertheless].

He records the album NINGUÉM [NO ONE], by BMG Brazil, produced by Liminha, along with the band that had already been with him in other shows, Edgard Scandurra, Paulo Tatit, Pedro Ito, Peter Price and Zaba Moreau. Ninguém has the special participation of Jorge Mautner, in the track Consciência [Consciousness]. Gilberto Gil writes the presentation release for the press. • Arnaldo composes and records the song Lavar as mãos [Washing your hands] for the TV Cultura children’s program Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum. This sound track is released in album CASTELO RÁ-TIM-BUM. • The song De mais ninguém [No one else’s], written with Marisa Monte, and recorded by her, is included in the North-American film Blue in the face, directed by Wayne Wang e Paul Auster. [A tree of what?], by Regina Casé, for Futura Channel. • The film Bicho de Sete Cabeças, receives the award of best soundtrack, at the Recife Festival. The original soundtrack of the film is also released in album BICHO DE SETE CABEÇAS, produced by André Abujamra. • Marcelo Fromer, from Titãs, passes away, a friend and partner of Arnaldo. • With Guilherme Kastrup, he does the performance Nome at the Festival of sound poems the air flows, in the city of Guarda, in Portugal. • He records the album PARADEIRO [WHEREABOUTS], by BMG Brazil produced by Carlinhos Brown and Alê Siqueira, at the studio Ilha dos Sapos [Frog Island], in Candeal, Salvador, BA. In this record, participate musicians from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. The title track has the special participation of Marisa Monte, sharing the vocals with Arnaldo . • Sony/BMG relaunches NOME, a remixed and remasterized CD + DVD set, with restored images. As an addendum, the lyrics of the thirty poems in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
